The US Department of Energy (DOE) has allocated $474m in grid resilience funding for the fiscal year 2024 (FY24) to states, territories and tribal nations.

In FY24, 49 states, five territories, 254 tribal nations and the District of Columbia were awarded $473.6m in grid resilience state and tribal formula grants to enhance power grids and address extreme weather impacts.

Supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and overseen by the DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, the grid resilience formula grant programme is a proactive measure against the increasing threats of wildfires, extreme weather and other natural disasters intensified by the climate crisis.

The funding aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to assist communities in obtaining affordable, reliable and clean electricity.

With this recent distribution, the DOE has now awarded almost $1.3bn since FY22.

The allocation formula considers factors, including population size, land area and the likelihood and impact of disruptive events, as well as past mitigation expenditures.

States and tribes will further allocate these funds to eligible entities for a range of projects, prioritising community benefits and the provision of clean, affordable and reliable energy.

In FY22 and FY23, a total of $815m in formula grants were provided, and recipients are currently identifying and sub-awarding specific projects.

This effort also promotes the Biden-Harris Administration’s Justice40 Initiative, which aims to ensure that 40% of the benefits from federal climate and clean energy investments reach disadvantaged communities.

The DOE anticipates issuing the FY25 Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants Announcement of Loan and Debt Restructuring (ALRD) in the second quarter of FY25.

US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said: “From remote and rural communities to urban centres, every pocket of America deserves a strong and reliable energy grid that can deploy clean, affordable power to homes and businesses.

“The transformative investments in grid infrastructure from the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda is helping protect our main streets and downtowns during extreme weather events, while creating good-paying jobs in the process.”

In October 2024, the US DOE announced $2bn in additional funding for 38 projects to protect the nation’s power grid from extreme weather and improve its transmission capacity.
