Danish cable supplier NKT has secured a contract from Polish distribution system operator Tauron Group to support grid upgrade.

NKT will supply 1300km of 20kV power cables to reinforce the Polish utility company’s power grid throughout 2024 and 2025.

The Danish cable supplier noted that Poland’s energy landscape is evolving, and by 2030 renewable sources are expected to constitute more than 30% of the country’s energy mix.

This includes a substantial rise in solar power capacity, projected to reach between 5GW and 7GW by 2030 and between 10GW and 16GW by 2040.

Tauron, as Poland’s largest electricity distributor, supplies 51.6 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity to 5.8 million customers across a 57,000km² area of southern Poland.

The Polish government has ambitious goals to modernise its power transmission infrastructure, enhance power supply security and develop a more interconnected and efficient grid.

These upgrades are essential to support Poland’s future economic growth and expand its use of renewable energy sources.

By 2040, Poland aims to establish an almost entirely new power system with a strong foundation of renewables.

NKT Applications executive vice-president Carlos Fernandez said: “We are proud to support Poland’s modernisation efforts of their power grids. As they increase their mix of renewable energy and shift towards a smarter and more efficient grid, our power cable solutions play an important role.

“This is a general trend we are seeing across Europe, which is why we are investing substantially in increasing our medium and high-voltage power cable capacity to support our customer’s growing demand.”

In May 2024 NKT concluded an inspection survey and remediation work on the East-West interconnector, a power link between Ireland and Great Britain.
