Skyborn Sweden has applied for a permit to construct the Polargrund offshore wind farm in Sweden, with a capacity of 3GW.

The permit application was filed with the Swedish government and the country’s Land and Environment Court.

The proposed project will be located 35km offshore the Kalix and Haparanda municipalities in Norrbotten county, within Sweden’s economic zone.

The Polargrund offshore wind farm will produce 10 terawatt hours (TWh) of fossil-free electricity, meeting 7% of the country’s current electricity needs.

The application aligns with the Environmental Code and the law governing Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The demand for electricity in Norrbotten is expected to surge, with projections indicating an 800% increase as the region’s industries transition towards cleaner operations.

Skyborn Sweden CEO Niclas Broman stated: “Polargrund Offshore is a key project for realising the business sector’s expansive development plans in Norrbotten and enabling Sweden’s move towards net-zero emissions.

“As the developer of Sweden’s northernmost offshore wind farm, we are committed to overcoming the unique challenges of constructing such a large-scale project in an arctic environment.”

Sweden’s overall electricity requirements are also projected to at least double in the coming decades, driven by the electrification of heavy industries.

The development of Polargrund is part of Skyborn’s commitment to enhancing Sweden’s energy system.

Skyborn’s Swedish portfolio now features four offshore wind farms with a potential yearly output of 40 TWh.

In September 2023, Skyborn Renewables was granted an environmental permit for the 1GW Storgrundet offshore wind project.

The permit allows for the installation of 51 turbines, expected to generate between 3 and 3.5TWh of electricity annually.

In July 2023, Skyborn applied for the 2.8GW Fyrskeppet offshore wind farm north of Örskar in Uppsala County, 50km from the coast.
