Formosa 2, a Taiwanese offshore wind farm with 376MW of capacity, has begun commercial operations, becoming the first Round 2 offshore project in the country to do so.
The wind farm is located between four and 10km off the coast of Miaoli County in the north-west of the country, next to Formosa 1, which has 128MW of capacity.
All 47 turbines powering the wind farm were installed in January this year, followed by full grid connection in March. Each of the turbines has 8MW of capacity.
The power generated from the wind farm will be sufficient to power nearly 380,000 Taiwanese households annually.
Operations and maintenance (O&M) facilities have been established in Taichung City and Taichung Port. The facilities include a state-of-the-art control centre with 24/7 monitoring and teams specialising in maintenance.
Formosa 2 project director Tiemen Maebe said: “Formosa 2 is proud to be the first Round 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan to achieve COD [commercial operation date], propelling Taiwan’s offshore wind development forward.
