SSE Renewables has completed the installation of the 103rd and final turbine at the 443MW Viking wind farm in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, UK.

The final Vestas V117 4.3MW turbine was erected in the northeast sector of the project site.

Deployment of turbines began in February 2023, and the work was concluded ahead of the initially estimated deadline of autumn 2023. The final turbine components arrived at the site in August 2023.

The Viking wind project is expected to conclude in 2024, and commissioning works will be ongoing throughout the year.

The wind farm’s 103 turbines will have a 443MW capacity, generating 1.8TWh of clean electricity annually.

The power will be fed to the 600MW Shetland high-voltage direct current link, currently under construction, which will connect Shetland to the UK mainland via a 260km-long subsea cable.

More than 280 convoys have supplied 1,000 turbine components to the site during the six-month delivery period, and the final turbine’s installation is described as a milestone.
