French engineering group Alstom has been awarded a €900m contract to supply core power generation equipment for a new 900MW coal fired power plant to be built at the Rybnik site in Poland.

The contract has been awarded by Elektrownia Rybnik (ERSA) and will be executed in two phases.
Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply the boiler, its coal milling system and the complete turbine hall, including steam turbine, generator and the balance-of-plant auxiliaries.
Phase I of the contract, worth around €100m ($134m), covers pre-engineering and support to ERSA during the permitting process and is effective immediately.
The second, €800m ($1.07bn) phase, will be effective after the full notice to proceed, expected mid-2013.

By GlobalDataAlstom will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and testing of the delivered equipment.
ERSA is one of the main Polish subsidiaries of the French electric utility, EDF.
EDF will cover the complete project engineering and coordination to integrate the Alstom supply in the power plant.
Commercial operations of the plant are scheduled to begin in 2017.
Currently, ERSA operates a 1775MW hard coal fired power plant at Rybnik that includes eight units commissioned over the period of 1972-1978.
The new plant is being constructed at the same site and will be fired by hard coal and biomass.
Upon construction of the new unit, the total ERSA generation capacity is expected to meet about 12% of the electricity demand in Poland.
The purpose of super critical power plants is to operate at a higher temperature than regular coal-fired power plants.
Alstom’s senior vice president of steam business Andreas Lusch said this contract further strengthens Alstom’s leadership in super critical technology in Europe and the rest of world.
"Our growing references in Poland clearly demonstrate the confidence that our customers place on this technology to produce cleaner, cheaper and reliable power allowing it to maximize local supplies and the project execution," added Lusch.
