Acciona Windpower, a subsidiary of Acciona, has won a contract from a joint venture between Voltalia, Chesf and Encalso for the wind power plants totalling 93MW in north-east Brazil.
Under the contract, Acciona will be responsible for the supply and installation of 31 AW 116/3000 and AW 125/3000 3MW-rated turbine models of 125m and 116m rotor diameter respectively.
The AW 125/3000 IIIa are suitable for low-wind sites with a swept area of 12,305m2, while the AW 116/3000 IIa are ideal for sites with moderate wind speeds and a swept surface area of 10,568m2, Acciona claims.
The turbines will be mounted on 120m concrete towers, which are manufactured using a construction system on site that reduces transport costs and the impact of the towers on the environment.
To manufacture the turbines, the company will cater hubs from its existing Bahia production plant, which will be complemented by a new Acciona nacelle manufacturing factory to be built by the end of 2014.
The scope of the contract also includes the operation and maintenance of the site for a period of 15 years.

By GlobalDataAcciona Windpower Brazil director Christiano Forman said the agreement involves leading players in the wind power development in Brazil.
Forman said, "It confirms the competitiveness of our technology and the particular suitability of the AW3000 wind turbines, which are more powerful and have a rotor diameter more in line with the wind potential of large areas of Brazil.
"We are delighted to be working together with Voltalia, CHESF and Encalso in the implementation of this project, which strengthens our position in the country."
The contract represents Acciona’s fourth contract in Brazil, where it has supplied/has orders in pipeline for 3MW wind turbines totalling 423MW, as well as the company’s second contract with the joint venture.
The first contract it won from the joint venture in 2013 includes the supply of turbines for two wind projects, the 90MW Areia Branca wind facility and the 120MW Sao Miguel de Gostoso wind facility, also located in the same region.
