Switzerland-based ABB has secured a contract, worth approximately $110m, from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to build substations for enhancing the transmission capacity in the country’s western region.
Under the deal, ABB will design, supply, install and commission a 380/110kV bulk supply point substation.
It also includes the expansion of the existing remote-end substations in Bisha and Sised to support the 380kV grid interconnection.
The new substations will connect the Taif East Governorate, a part of the Mecca region, to the national 380kV transmission grid.
ABB said the 110kV power supply enabled by the substations will serve the settlements of Turbah, Al-Khurmah and Rania, mitigating the use of diesel-generated power in isolated areas.
ABB Power Systems division head Claudio Facchin said the substations will strengthen the grid and enhance transmission capacity, bringing much-needed electricity to the region to meet growing domestic and industrial demand.

By GlobalData"We are privileged to continue supporting the development of Saudi Arabia’s power infrastructure," Facchin said.
Earlier in 2014, ABB secured orders worth around $30m from SEC to refurbish FACTS systems in the Eastern Operating Area.
ABB supplies air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kilovolts.
The company also supplies control and protection equipment, auxiliary systems and substation automation equipment compliant with the international IEC61850 standard to enable monitoring and control of the substations from a remote control centre.
