ITT Corporation’s Control Technologies business in collaboration with the Power Transmission Division of Siemens have developed new seismic damping and isolation systems to protect electrical grid infrastructures from earthquakes and other earth vibration.
The new damping and isolation systems are developed by ITT’s Enidine brand technologies.
ITT said that the companies’ seismic protection system is designed to reduce earthquake stress in high-voltage components, such as live-tank circuit-breakers and fixed series capacitors (FSCs), by up to 80%.
ITT’s Control Technologies business president Munish Nanda said that ITT has a broad range of energy absorption devices for infrastructure applications, and specialises in working with key partners such as Siemens to combine their technologies in ways that create unique and optimal solutions.
"Through applying our capabilities, we help protect our customers’ systems, buildings and structures, and help to solve their most difficult challenges," Nanda said.
Siemens Power Transmission division senior seismic engineering expert Christos Kotanidis said, "Thanks to our close cooperation with ITT, Siemens managed to develop advanced finite element models of the high voltage equipment including base isolation in order to accurately simulate their complex combined seismic response."

By GlobalDataFeatured with an interconnected and finely tuned set of viscous dampers and wire rope isolators, the seismic damping and isolation systems will isolate the high-voltage components’ base from shock and vibration coming from the earth.
These new systems can be customised for each project anywhere in the world seismic activity is of concern.
ITT Control Technologies EMEA managing director for Peter Bauer said, "We’re able to customise, recommend and fine tune these systems because we have experience with preventing the structural failure of power plant turbines as well as bridges, high-rise buildings and stadiums."
ITT will showcase the technology at Hannover Messe trade fair in Germany, which will be held during 7 to 11 April 2014.
