Transmission line projects developer Clean Line Energy has secured an approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for its proposed Grain Belt Express wind transmission line project.

Once completed, the 750-mile overhead direct current power line project will connect wind energy from western Kansas with utilities and customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and states farther east.

The project is expected to deliver 3,500MW of electricity, enough to power more than 1.4 million homes.

Clean Line Energy Indiana Office of Energy Development Tristan Vance said, "The Grain Belt Express is a great example of how energy resource availability and technological efficiency can combine to contribute to a reliable, affordable, diverse energy mix."

The FERC order has been issued in response to the application filed by Clean Line in November 2013.

"Clean Line has been authorised to negotiate bilateral agreements for 100% of the line’s capacity."

With this order, Clean Line will be able to sell transmission capacity to customers of the project, including utilities and other load serving entities or clean energy generators.

Additionally, Clean Line has been authorised to negotiate bilateral agreements for 100% of the line’s capacity.

Generator interconnection to the proposed power line will be subject to the requirements of the project’s open access transmission tariff.

Expected to achieve commercial operation by 2018, the project would enable more than $7bn of investment in new wind farms.

In November 2013, Clean Line had received an order from the Kansas Corporation to construct the 370-mile Kansas portion of the line.
