Fortum has signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce for the modernisation of the Loviisa nuclear power plant in Finland.
The agreement with Rolls-Royce will replace a consortium comprising Areva SA and Siemens AG as the contractor to modernise safety systems at the Loviisa nuclear plant.
Fortum said that the project will be carried out over several years, while it is included in Fortum’s normal capital expenditure.
Modernisation work at the plant, which started in 2005, is due to be completed by the end of 2018.
As per the new agreement, Rolls-Royce will supply all the required automation systems including planning, testing and installations.
Rolls-Royce’s sub-supplier Metso will be providing non-safety operational instrumentation and control (I&C), field design and implementation on site.

By GlobalDataThe Finnish utility had terminated the modernisation project agreement with Areva-Siemens consortium.
Fortum said that during the testing of the next phase of the agreement with the Areva-Siemens, it appeared that the implementation of the current project would have been further delayed from its original time schedule and would have taken too long to complete.
Termination of the agreement will not affect the safety, reliable operation or the personnel at the Loviisa plant.
Unit 1 at the Loviisa nclear power plant has an operational license to 2027 and Unit 2 to 2030.
Fortum said the modernisation project targets safe and reliable operation of the Loviisa nuclear power plant until the end of the plant’s operational licenses.
