Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned a 250MW coal-based thermal power plant generating unit in Chhabra, Rajasthan, India.

The company commissioned the unit in Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL)’s two 250MW Chhabra Thermal Power Project (TPP) Stage-II, located in Baran District of Rajasthan.

The coal-based thermal power plant’s capacity is up to 1,000MW with the commissioning of the fourth 250MW unit at Chhabra TPP.

Earlier, BHEL had commissioned three units of similar rating at Stage I and Stage II of the power project.

RRVUNL had awarded a INR9.9bn ($164.6m) contract to the company to install two units of 250MW each (Units 3&4) under the Stage – II expansion project of Chhabra TPP.

The contract scope included design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam generators and steam turbine generators and associated auxiliaries with state-of-the-art controls & instrumentation (C&I) system.

The project’s equipment was supplied by BHEL’s Haridwar, Trichy, Ranipet and Bangalore plants whereas erection and commissioning of the equipment was carried out by BHEL’s Power Sector – Northern Region.

BHEL had commissioned the 160MW gas-based combined cycle power plant in May 2014, for RRVUNL at Ramgarh.

Currently, BHEL is working on a two 660MW coal-fired project based on eco-friendly supercritical technology at Suratgarh in Rajasthan as well as the two 700MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Project of NPCIL in Rajasthan.
