Siemens GIS

German conglomerate Siemens has received an order worth more than €90m for the delivery of 111 switch panels, which will be installed in five gas-insulated high-voltage switchgears (GIS) in Saudi Arabia.

Siemens has received the order from alfanar Construction, which is the general contractor in charge of constructing the turnkey stations for Saudi Electricity Company, the state-backed energy provider.

The order marks Siemen’s entry into the direct EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) market for GIS systems in Saudi Arabia.

Siemens will commence shipping of the switch panels in the second-half of 2015.

The 111 single-break circuit breakers to be supplied are from Siemen’s 8DQ1-GIS switchgear series, which feature a compact design with a standard panel width of 2.20m, manufactured at its Berlin plant.

The GIS switchgears are the smallest in the 380kV range and will be installed at five stations in Saudi Arabia’s northern Al-Jouf region: Qurayyat; Tabarjal; Al-Jouf; Arar and Waad Al-Shamaal.

Siemens Energy high-voltage products business unit head Harald Griem said: "We welcome the opportunity to support the expansion of Saudi Arabia’s power transmission grid.

"The customer was won over by our tried-and-tested products and excellent delivery capability. These attributes underscore the competitive strength of our GIS system business in key markets such as Saudi Arabia."

Earlier this year, the firm had received four previous orders for its new compact 8DQ1-GIS switchgear from Saudi Arabia.
