The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has selected five Boralex solar projects with 540MW capacity and 77MW battery as part of its 2021 solicitation for utility-scale renewable energy certificates (REC).
Located across upstate New York, the solar farms have the potential to generate more than 1TWh of clean energy per year, which will be sufficient to power more than 141,200 homes annually.
The five solar projects include the 250MW Fort Covington Solar Farm, which is paired with a 77MW battery energy storage system (BESS), for which Boralex has partnered with Savion.
It also includes the 130MW Newport Solar Farm, as well as the 100MW Fort Edward Solar Farm and the Foothills Solar Farm with a 40MW capacity.
The fifth solar farm that was selected by NYSERDA is the 20MW Easton Solar Farm.
Boralex president and CEO Patrick Decostre said: “Today’s announcement solidifies Boralex’s role in New York State’s energy market during this critical expansion of renewable electricity generation.

By GlobalData“These projects showcase the strategic, creative approaches to solar farm development and community engagement our reputation is built on. I am proud of the Boralex team and their efforts to create clean, competitive energy.”
Solar projects are expected to benefit the New York state in the form of new employment opportunities in the region, and tax revenues to the towns, counties, and local school districts.
The announcement will see the execution of a 20-year renewable energy standard agreements between Boralex and NYSERDA for the purchase of RECs associated with the energy production.
RECs represent the renewable electricity which enter the electricity grid, and each REC is equivalent to the environmental attributes of 1MWh of electricity generated from a renewable source, such as solar.
NYSERDA president and CEO Doreen Harris said: “The large-scale solar projects announced today, including five Boralex projects, bring New York State significantly closer to reaching our clean energy goals and transitioning us toward a zero-emission electricity system.
“NYSERDA looks forward to working with Boralex to ensure these projects are advanced responsibly and with local input to allow host communities to realize the critical jobs and investments that will come from these solar farms.”
In April this year, Boralex partnered with Énergir and Hydro-Québec to develop three 400MW wind projects in Quebec, Canada.
