Siemens' SWT-3.0-113 wind turbine

German technology giant Siemens has received turbine delivery orders for three wind power projects totalling 130MW in Italy.

Under the order, the firm will be delivering 42 turbines in total for the wind projects, with capacities of 3MW and 3.2MW.

The deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

The projects include the 60MW Melfi project, the 16MW Cerreto project and a 54MW project near the community of Tricarico, all three of which are situated in the Basilicata region in southern Italy.

While the Melfi and the Tricarico project will be equipped with SWT-3.0-113 turbine models, the Cerreto project, which is located near the community of Genzano di Lucania, will feature five of Siemens’ SWT-3.2-113 units.

The Cerreto project is expected to be commissioned in the following few weeks.

Installation work for the other projects is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2016.

According to Siemens, the awarding procedure by the Italian regulatory authority Gestore Servizi Energetici (GSE) has been favouring the market for economical wind turbines.

The process is applicable for wind farms of above 5MW and has been used since 2012. It involves the developers offering the greatest possible discounts from the defined base rate of €127 for each MW/h of generated power.

Siemens wind power and renewables onshore CEO Thomas Richterich said: "The order awarding process in place since 2012 has resulted in greater cost transparency for onshore wind power projects in Italy.

"We are therefore very pleased that we can highlight the efficiency of our direct-drive D3 wind turbines here and especially for three Italian projects at once within one year."

Additionally, the firm has won a separate order to deliver new power supply technology for the broadcasting centre of the German TV station ZDF in Mainz.

As part of the project, Siemens will be responsible for replacing the existing 20kV medium-voltage switchgear at the centre and modernise the protective relay system.

The firm will develop an autonomous control system for controlling and monitoring the entire power supply at the centre.
