General Electric (GE) has been contracted to supply gas turbines for 1,029MW Caithness Moxie Freedom power plant in Luzerne County, within the US state of Pennsylvania.

Under the contract, GE will deliver two 7HA.02 gas turbines for the plant, which will generate electricity enough to power close to one million US homes.

In addition to gas turbines, GE will provide two steam turbines, control system, associated equipment and a long-term services contract for the power plant that is jointly developed by Moxie Energy and Caithness Energy.

The turbines will operate in single-shaft combined cycle configurations. If necessary, one unit can run while the other is offline, the company said.

The combined cycle plant is expected to become operational in 2018.

GE Power gas power systems president and CEO Joe Mastrangelo said: "The technology inside our gas turbines comes from across the GE portfolio, and we also have world-class steam tail capability with the addition of Alstom to our business."

GE Energy Financial Services, along with its co-leads, is offering $592m in senior secured credit facilities to support the Caithness Moxie Freedom project’s construction and operation, with eight other banks in the syndicate.

BNP Paribas, Citigroup and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial are co-leading the project’s financing.

Meanwhile, GE’s power services business is installing hardware and software equipment to upgrade and modernise four Dynegy’s power plants in the US.

GE will supply eight sets of Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades and OpFlex Peak Fire software for the fleet of 7FA.03 gas turbines at Dynegy’s Hanging Rock and Washington energy facilities in Ohio, and the Fayette Energy facility in Pennsylvania.

"The technology inside our gas turbines comes from across the GE portfolio, and we also have world-class steam tail capability with the addition of Alstom to our business."

The upgrade will increase the power plants’ total capacity by 210MW.

Dynegy is also updating its energy facility in Oswego, New York, with four sets of AGP hardware.

In addition, GE will install its 7F.05 gas turbine at Xcel Energy’s Black Dog power plant in Minnesota.

The gas turbine will replace the existing coal-fired steam boiler at the plant.
