Italian oil and gas company Enel has entered an agreement with engineering firm Comal to build a factory to produce solar trackers at the Montalto di Castro power plant in Italy.

Comal’s Tracker Sun Hunter factory will have the capacity to manufacture enough trackers to support the generation of almost 1GW of solar energy a year.

The facility will cover a 30,000m² area is expected to create 70 jobs in the region once complete.

Preparatory works at the site are set to begin in the early months of this year.

Solar trackers allow photovoltaic panels to orient themselves and follow the sun throughout the day.

The Montalto di Castro power station site is no longer in use and its decommissioned oil-fired units are currently being demolished.

The solar tracker factory is part of Enel’s plan to develop sites that it no longer uses.

The company also plans to build a 10MW solar photovoltaic plant on a 20ha site within the disused complex and install 245MW worth of energy storage systems elsewhere at the site.

It has initiated authorisation procedures for both these schemes.

Enel Italy Green Power and Thermal Generation head Luca Solfaroli Camillocci said: “The agreement with Comal and the new development of the Montalto di Castro site offer a concrete demonstration of the positive effects of the energy transition for businesses, for the regions and for the country.”

Last November, Enel announced plans to invest $190bn by 2030 to fund its renewable energy and network businesses.
