Duke Energy secured approval from the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) to replace its 376MW Asheville coal-fired power plant with a new $1bn natural gas facility.

Marubeni and El Sewedy to do feasibility study of Egypt coal power plant
Japan-based Marubeni and Egypt’s El Sewedy Electric signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) to perform a feasibility study for construction of a coal-fired power plant in the North African country.
The MoU is part of Marubeni’s efforts to strengthen its global power infrastructure business.
Under the agreed terms, Marubeni and El Sewedy will assess the feasibility of developing a high-efficiency, ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant in the West Mattrouh region for Egypt’s state-run electricity utility EEHC.
Japan court orders KEPCO to shut two nuclear reactors in Takahama
A court in Japan ordered Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) to suspend two of its nuclear reactors in Takahama, western Japan, following complaints from local residents about plant safety.
The order from Otsu District Court emerged before the fifth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Fakushima nuclear facility and large areas of Japan.
Following the court verdict, KEPCO stated it conducted a thorough examination of power supply and demand, as well as of the organisational structure to safely shut reactors.
Vivint Solar scraps $2.2bn merger with SunEdison
Vivint Solar called off the merger deal with SunEdison, with the $2.2bn acquisition plan failing to close.
SunEdison had agreed to acquire Vivint Solar last July in a cash-and-stock deal.
However, the acquisition deal had been severely criticised by hedge funds and other investors as SunEdison’s share price, as well as its finances had weakened since then, reported Reuters.
Boskalis to acquire offshore wind energy related activities of VolkerWessels
Dutch company Royal Boskalis Westminster signed a letter of intent (LoI) to acquire maritime and offshore wind energy related activities of VolkerWessels.
As part of the transaction, Boskalis will acquire VBMS, Stemat and Volker Stevin International (VSI). It will also carry out the two offshore wind park projects, Wikinger and Veja Mate, on a 100% basis.
The projects were acquired by Boskalis and VSI in late 2014 and mid-2015.
Enel Green Power inaugurates world’s first renewable hybrid plant in US
Enel Green Power opened the first triple renewable hybrid plant in Fallon, Nevada, US.
The Stillwater renewable hybrid facility is said to be the only power plant in the world producing renewable energy by combining geothermal, solar thermal and solar photovoltaic technologies.
It has increased power availability and reduced energy intermittency by combining geothermal and solar technologies in a single production site.
Dominion wins regulatory approval for $1.3bn US combined cycle power plant
Dominion Virginia Power received approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for its $1.3bn combined cycle power station in Greensville County.
The proposed 1,588MW natural gas-fired power station is being built under the company’s plan to meet air quality and proposed carbon dioxide emissions standards, while serving the growing demand for energy.
Construction will begin later this year, with plans to bring the power plant online in 2019.
Malakoff brings 1,000MW coal-fired power plant online in Malaysia
Independent water and power producer Malakoff commissioned the 1,000MW Tanjung Bin Energy (TBE) power plant in Johor, Malaysia.
Also known as T4, the new facility is adjacent to the Malakoff’s existing 2,100MW coal-fired Tanjung Bin power plant (TBPP).
A global consortium comprising GE, Mudajaya and Shin Eversendai, has developed T4, under a contract worth more than €1bn.
I Squared Capital to acquire energy company Viridian
Global infrastructure investment manager I Squared Capital agreed to acquire energy company Viridian from Arcapita.
Despite the details of the acquisition’s financial terms not being disclosed, media sources are reporting the deal may be valued at €1bn.
With more than 480 employees, Viridian operates across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland under two main brands Energia and Power NI.
