German technology group Voith has secured a contract from UK-based energy supplier SSE to upgrade the Mucomir small hydroelectric power station in Scotland.

Under the terms of the deal, Voith is responsible for the construction, installation, and commissioning of the power station's turbines.

The company will also have to oversee replacement of the digital governors and hydraulic units, as well as  modernisation of the generator.

Voith's hydro Germany project manager Carsten Fleck said: “The modernisation work will be done during a shutdown.

“In respect of the fabrication and installation of the components, the tight schedule is challenging.

“However, thanks to our experience and close collaboration with the plant operator SSE, we will be able to successfully complete the project within the scheduled time period.”

"The specially-designed new turbine runner helps reduce harmful effects on fish."

Construction is expected for completion in autumn next year, when the upgraded small hydroelectric power station will be able to meet environmental standards.

SSE Hydro's asset manager Peter Diver said: “The modernisation will help ensure the economic viability of the power plant while taking account of ecological aspects and using the most effective technological solution.”

The specially-designed new turbine runner helps reduce harmful effects on fish, making it easier and safer for them to pass through it.

Operating since 1962, the Mucomir small hydroelectric power station is one of nearly 70 SSE hydropower plants developed in Scotland.
