UK power supply company Aggreko had met additional power demand over Christmas with a 50MW diesel-generated power installation in Benin.
The company installed the equipment on site in response to a request from the Energy Ministry to bring forward a portion of the 100MW ADDgas power project being installed at Maria Gleta.
ADDGAS is an add-on technology, which substitutes a significant portion of diesel fuel with natural gas.
Aggreko received the ministry’s request in October last year and initiated civil engineering preparation work on the site on 1 November. The ministry officially received power on 21 December, which was four days ahead of schedule for Christmas.
During the installation work, the company said it has provided employment and training to 40 people. New generators for the site were imported from the Middle East and Europe.
Aggreko's Africa managing director James Shepherd said: “Our first priority is always to ensure maximum capacity, so when asked to bring forward some of the power in time for Christmas, we did.

The 100MW ADDgas-powered 161kV substation at Maria Gleta is expected to be completed in February this year. Power generated will be used for the country’s ten million inhabitants and will support industries, including cement, food, beverage, and agriculture, as well as fishing.
Once the project is fully operational, Aggreko plans to relocate 15MW from Gbegamey and 35MW from Akpapka.
