An Acciona joint venture (JV) and Mexico’s Tuto Energy has signed a private purchase agreement (PPA) with Tuto Energy Trading to expand the Puerto Libertad photovoltaic (PV) project in Mexico.

The Puerto Libertad solar PV plant is located in the State of Sonora in Mexico.

Under the agreement, the installed power generation capacity of the solar plant will be increased by double to reach 339MWp (270MW rated capacity).

Acciona Energia's Mexico director Miguel Ángel Alonso said: “We are very pleased with this agreement, which gives the Puerto Libertad project the right dimension.

“It will be the biggest PV plant in Mexico, from where we will generate electricity to cover already-committed public and private consumption.”

While the construction of the project is expected to commence in the last trimester of this year, it is planned to enter into service in the first semester of 2019.

The energy generated from the Puerto Libertad solar plant is enough to meet the electricity requirements of 489,000 households across Mexico and can reduce carbon emissions by more than 776,000 metric tonnes every year.

Under the scope of the project, Acciona Energia will be responsible for conducting the turnkey construction of the solar facility under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.
