US-based independent power producer EDF Renewable Energy (EDF RE) has created new business unit distributed electricity and storage (DES), which will primarily focus on distributed solar and storage projects up to 30MW.
The newly formed unit will pursue emerging opportunities by providing products and services to utility and commercial and industrial (C&I) customers in the US.
Last year, EDF RE acquired groSolar, a developer and energy performance certificate (EPC) provider of industrial and municipal solar projects, to strengthen its position in the distributed energy sector.
The company also hired former CEO of Solar Grid Storage Tom Leyden and former managing director at SunEdison Felix Aguayo to expand its development engineering services (DES) team. Tom Leyden said: “C&I and utility customers are missing the opportunity to increase their reliability and reduce costs by not taking a more holistic approach to their energy procurement and asset utilisation.”
The DES will be using EDF’s capabilities and implementing new solar-plus-storage business models for C&I and utility customers.
EDF RE's portfolio strategy vice-president Raphael Declercq said: “In ramping up our commitment to distributed generation and energy storage, EDF RE will be developing new products for our customers that will also help enable greater penetration of wind and solar into the grid.”
