American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted approval in principle (AIP) to concept designs for a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant and a storage and regasification unit (FSRU) developed by Japan’s Chiyoda.
The AIP was granted after ABS reviewed the concepts and confirmed their ability to meet the indented class requirements.
ABS' global gas solutions vice-president Patrick Janssens said: “As the energy mix shifts and global demand for gas increases, concepts like this will reshape how energy is supplied.
“By working closely with Chiyoda, we were able to help them prove the feasibility of this novel and innovative concept.”
The new Chiyoda LNG power concept offers a fresh approach to delivering power to remote areas of the world. It is based on existing LNG carriers, which are converted into floating power plants with small (72MW) to medium (400MW) scale generation capabilities.
Chiyoda's project manager Toyomitsu Kanai said: “By applying ABS’ robust guidance, we were able to develop a concept that meets operational demands and advances safety.
