Siemens Gamesa has signed an agreement for the supply of 94 8MW turbines (752MW) at the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore windpower plants being developed by Dong Energy.
The plants will cover an area of 128.3km², 22km from the coast of the Dutch province of Zeeland. This area has a water depth of 14m – 38m.
While the nacelles for this project will be assembled in Siemens Gamesa’s new factory in Cuxhaven, Germany, the blades will be manufactured in Hull, England.
Siemens Gamesa's offshore chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Hannibal said: "We are pleased that DONG Energy has selected Siemens Gamesa for the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind power plants in the Dutch part of the North Sea.
“The advanced model of our proven direct drive offshore wind turbine platform and our advanced services will leverage the energy output of this lighthouse project and help to move offshore wind into the energy mainstream in Europe."
To date, Siemens Gamesa has installed or commissioned more than 200 direct drive wind turbines in the 6MW to 8MW class in offshore windfarms. An 8MW turbine can supply power to around 8,000 households in Europe.
