The wind farm is to be built on a 550km² area in Hecate Strait, located between Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert in British Columbia.

It is expected to be developed on bottom-fixed structures because of the shallow water at the project site.

“We see this opportunity as a first step to bringing offshore wind power to Canada in what could become a strategic partnership with the nation’s frontrunner project.”

Following the completion of the first phase of the project, the wind turbines are estimated to cover less than 100km² in the Strait.

The wind farm will be linked to the mainland near Prince Rupert, and to Haida Gwaii, via submarine cable.

Upon completion, the Haida Energy Field project could help the province to meet its future energy needs.

DONG Energy North America Wind Power president Thomas Brostrøm said: “Offshore wind is a reliable homegrown energy source and we are excited to explore the Canadian market.
