By GlobalDataØrsted Onshore senior vice-president Philip Moore said: “Western Trail Wind is a well-sited greenfield development project that will provide low-cost, reliable power to the Texas grid.
“I’m very proud of our team working on this project as we continue to scale the business and play a leading role in the US’s energy transition.”
With the completion of the Western Trail Wind Farm, the company’s total operational onshore capacity has increased to more than 2.8GW of wind, solar and battery storage.
The wind farm has been built on a property owned by billionaire businessman Stan Kroenke.
Kroenke Ranches land manager Daniel Zyvoloski said: “The Waggoner Ranch has a rich history for developing energy resources.
“We’re excited to partner with Ørsted on the Western Trail Wind Farm to make renewable energy a part of our ranching operation.”
In addition to clean energy, Western Trail will deliver long-term financial returns to the Wilbarger and Baylor counties and independent school districts in terms of increased property tax.
Ørsted worked with tax equity providers, equipment suppliers and construction companies to deliver the project.
The Western Trail project bolsters the company’s asset base in Texas and has long-term power purchase agreements in place with PepsiCo, Hormel Foods and Nucor.
PepsiCo and Hormel Foods will also purchase clean energy generated by Ørsted’s Haystack Wind project in Nebraska, which is set to begin operations later this year.
Once commissioned, the Haystack Wind project is expected to power around 85,000 homes across the US.
