Renewable energy producer Statkraft has selected technology company ABB for upgrading its Straumsmo and Innset hydropower plants in Norway.
These plants generate a combined total of 228MW of renewable energy. The contract also has an option to refurbish the Båtsvann hydropower plant.
Under the contract, ABB will modernise automation, control and power systems at the Statkraft plants, improving their efficiency and reliability.
Statkraft North region senior vice-president Dag Smedbold said: “Ensuring the efficiency, stability, reliability and robustness of our automation systems and electrical systems is critical as both plants operate unmanned.”
For this upgrade, ABB will use its distributed control platform called ABB Ability System 800xA. The platform was designed to integrate process control, power management, electrical, and safety within a common reliable system.
A spokesperson for ABB said the system can fully control the power plant, ranging from high-voltage switchgear to low-voltage motor control as well as enable management of AC/DC systems and lighting and heating at each plant.
