SSE Renewables has awarded a contract to Nexans to design, manufacture and install the high-voltage (HV) cables for the Seagreen offshore windfarm.
Under the contract, Nexans will install onshore and offshore export cables for Phase 1 development of the project. Construction on the project will start next year.

By GlobalDataLocated 27km off the coast of Angus, UK, Seagreen 1 will provide located 27km off the coast of Angus, UK. Upon completion in 2022/23, Seagreen 1 will provide 1,075MW toward Scotland’s net-zero ambition.
Nexans’ factory in Charleston, US, will supply the three 65km offshore export cables, and the company’s Aurora cable-laying vessel will install them. The vessel is currently under construction with delivery expected in the second quarter of next year.
Meanwhile, its plant in Charleroi, Belgium will manufacture the three 20km onshore export cables.
Seagreen project director John Hill said: “We are pleased to have Nexans’ expertise on the Seagreen project, as Nexans is a world leader in the supply and installation of subsea power cables.”
Nexans Subsea and Land System Business Group executive vice-president Ragnhild Katteland said: “We are delighted to receive this contract from SSE Renewables and we are excited to help bring the biggest windfarm in Scotland to life.”
Subsea export cables will be used to transmit the electricity generated by the Seagreen turbines to landfall at Carnoustie.
These land cables will transmit the electricity to a new substation at Tealing to feed into the UK’s national electricity transmission system.
