US-based giant company Amazon has revealed plans for five new utility-scale solar power projects in Australia, China and the US.
The new renewable energy projects will contribute to the company’s goals of achieving 80% renewable energy by 2024, 100% renewable energy by 2030 and net-zero carbon by 2040.

By GlobalDataAmazon’s solar power farm in China, which is said to be Amazon’s first in the country, will have 100MW capacity and is being developed in Shandong.
Once completed, Amazon’s Shandong facility is expected to generate 128,000MWh of clean energy annually.
The 105MW solar project in Australia is located in New South Wales. It has the capacity to generate 250,000MWh of clean energy annually sufficient to power 40,000 average Australian homes.
In the US, Amazon has announced three new projects, of which two are located in Ohio with a 200MW and an 80MW capacity.
The third US solar power facility is located in Virginia with a 130MW capacity.
Once operational, the three facilities are expected to generate enough energy that will be sufficient to power 69,000 average homes in the US each year.
Amazon sustainability vice-president Kara Hurst said: “As a signatory to the Climate Pledge, we’re committed to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement ten years early and reaching net-zero carbon across Amazon by 2040.
“These five new renewable energy projects are a critical part of our roadmap to reach this goal. In fact, we believe it is possible to reach 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the goals we announced last fall. While this will be challenging, we have a credible plan to get there.”
Upon completion, the five solar facilities totalling 615MW of installed capacity will be supplying nearly 1.2 million MWh of additional renewable energy to the company’s fulfilment network and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres.
