Canadian electricity transmission and distribution company Hydro One has revealed plans to improve power reliability in Ontario’s Muskoka region.
As part of the initiative, Hydro One will invest around $16m to upgrade its power distribution grid with new remote monitoring devices. This will help the company to effectively handle power outages from its central hub Ontario Grid Control Center.
The upgrade works will see the deployment of 450 communicating fault indicators for detecting the outage location, and connecting 38 smart switches. Additionally, the company will also carry out tree trimming works along 2,000km of power lines every three years replacing the original eight- to 10-year cycle.
With these initiatives, the company aims to reduce the number and duration of power outages in the region.
Hydro One chief corporate affairs and customer care officer Jason Fitzsimmons said: “Any outage, no matter how short, can disrupt people’s daily lives, businesses and productivity. Through these investments, Hydro One plans to provide more reliable power that the communities in Muskoka region are counting on.
“This is part of our plan to modernize an ageing distribution system by making prudent investments in new technology, replacing old poles and trimming hazardous trees.”
